New Life

A journey into parenthood with Caroline Ciavaldini and James Pearson

What’s the toughest expedition an athlete can ever go on? A first-ascent in the Himalaya? Climbing in sub-50 degrees Celsius in Antarctica? Rock climbing slippery, overgrown waterfalls in Japan? Climbing the world’s first E11 trad-route? Or could it be raising a child or, harder still, children?

When experienced climbers and The North Face athletes Caroline Ciavaldini and James Pearson had their first child, Arthur, they vowed to combine their roles as parents with their roles as athletes. In so doing, they faced challenges they’d never encountered before.

Would they lose their sponsors? Would their climbing skills and mindset be affected? And the bigger question: would it even be possible to combine climbing expeditions with raising a child? What they weren’t expecting was the reception their tough decisions would face and the questions they’d raise about parenting today.

“Having a child has completely changed our perspective and given us a new meaning to life beyond climbing,” says Caroline. “For me, being the best mum means sometimes taking risks and living without regret. Having Arthur in our lives has only reinforced this.”

The film New Life chronicles the journey, the decisions, joys and struggles of parenthood through the eyes of two of climbing’s best athletes with guest appearances from The North Face Global Athlete team captain, Hilaree Nelson and Freeride World Tour snowboarding champion Xavier De Le Rue, who each discuss their own unique experiences of parenthood in a career lined with risk.
